Living in the Rio Verde Foothills: Things to Do, See & Eat

Tucked just northeast of Scottsdale, the Rio Verde Foothills offers a lifestyle that can be hard to find elsewhere in the Valley. Wide-open desert, mountain views, larger properties, equestrian living, and seemingly endless opportunities for outdoor recreation are all part of everyday life here yet North Scottsdale's shopping, dining, and amenities are still within reach.

For those who call the Rio Verde Foothills home, some of Arizona's most beautiful landscapes are practically in the backyard. You can start the morning on a hiking or horseback riding trail, spend the afternoon along the Verde River, and finish the day enjoying dinner and a beautiful desert sunset.

Whether you're considering a move to the area, visiting for the first time, or already lucky enough to call the Foothills home, here are some of our favorite ways to experience the Rio Verde lifestyle.

Explore the McDowell Sonoran Preserve

One of the biggest advantages of living in the Rio Verde Foothills is having the Scottsdale McDowell Sonoran Preserve right next door. The Preserve offers an extensive network of trails and beautiful Sonoran Desert scenery for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and exploring.

Two particularly convenient access points for Rio Verde Foothills residents are Fraesfield Trailhead and Granite Mountain Trailhead.

Fraesfield offers easy-to-moderate trails through rolling desert terrain and is particularly popular with equestrians. The trailhead includes parking for both vehicles and horse trailers, making it easy to head out for a morning hike or ride.

Granite Mountain is another local favorite, with trails winding through impressive granite formations, saguaro fields, and wide-open desert. Hiking, biking, and equestrian trails provide options for different ways of experiencing the landscape, while scenic viewpoints look east toward the Verde River Valley and Mazatzal Mountains.

Other nearby trailheads, including Brown's Ranch, Pima Dynamite, and Tom's Thumb, open up even more of the Preserve to explore.

Horseback Riding in the Desert

For equestrians, the Rio Verde Foothills offers something increasingly difficult to find in a major metropolitan area: space to keep your horses at home with incredible riding opportunities nearby.

Most trails within the McDowell Sonoran Preserve are available for equestrian use, and major northern trailheads provide equestrian staging areas. Fraesfield's smoother, rolling terrain is particularly popular for horseback riding, while Granite Mountain offers access to more miles of beautiful Sonoran Desert scenery.

Beyond the Preserve, the surrounding desert and Tonto National Forest provide even more opportunities to experience Arizona from horseback.

It's one of the reasons horse properties remain such an important part of the Rio Verde Foothills lifestyle.

Head Into Tonto National Forest

On the opposite side of the community lies the enormous Tonto National Forest, creating another outdoor playground just minutes from home.

Here, the landscape becomes a little more rugged. Residents can explore the desert through hiking, horseback riding, camping, scenic drives, and off-highway vehicle adventures.

For off-road enthusiasts, the nearby Desert Vista area provides designated OHV access points, including access from 136th Street and Needle Rock Road. With miles of desert roads and trails nearby, weekends can easily turn into an adventure without having to travel far from home.

Always check current Forest Service maps, access requirements, permit rules, closures, and fire restrictions before heading out.

Spend an Afternoon at the Verde River & Needle Rock

One of the area's greatest natural treasures is the Verde River. The contrast of flowing water, green riparian vegetation, towering rock formations, and surrounding Sonoran Desert makes this part of the Foothills especially beautiful.

Needle Rock Recreation Area provides nearby access to the Verde River within Tonto National Forest. The area is known for its rocky riverfront, dramatic formations, wildlife, and neighboring mesquite bosque.

Pack a picnic, enjoy the scenery, look for local wildlife, explore along the river, or simply spend a quiet afternoon near the water. The Verde River corridor also offers opportunities for activities such as fishing, birding, photography, and boating in appropriate areas.

It's an experience that can be easy to forget exists so close to Scottsdale until you're standing beside the river surrounded by desert mountains.

Grab Coffee or Breakfast at a Local Favorite

After an early morning outdoors, there are several nearby places to grab breakfast, lunch, or coffee.

The Pony Express Café in the Troon North area is a local breakfast and lunch spot that's perfect before or after a morning on the trails. From classic breakfasts and omelets to hearty favorites, it has the relaxed neighborhood atmosphere that fits right into the area.

Closer to Rio Verde, Honey & Sol combines a café with a small neighborhood market. Stop in for coffee, breakfast or lunch, grab something to go, or pick up a few essentials. It's the kind of community-oriented spot that helps give Rio Verde its small-town feel.

Enjoy Lunch, Dinner & Drinks Nearby

When it's time to trade hiking boots for dinner and drinks, there are plenty of options nearby.

Pinnacle Grille near Troon North offers a casual neighborhood atmosphere for lunch, dinner, happy hour, or drinks on the patio.

For a meal with a view, Needle Rock Kitchen & Tap at Verde River Golf & Social Club pairs contemporary American dining with beautiful desert and mountain surroundings. It's a great place to end a day exploring the area, especially when an Arizona sunset is putting on a show.

Golfers can also enjoy the lifestyle surrounding the Verde River Golf & Social Club, an 18-hole golf destination surrounded by the Sonoran Desert and mountain scenery.

A Perfect Day in the Rio Verde Foothills

So, what might a day living in the Rio Verde Foothills actually look like?

Start with coffee and breakfast at Honey & Sol before heading to Fraesfield for a morning hike, bike ride, or horseback ride. Spend the afternoon exploring Tonto National Forest or relaxing near the Verde River and Needle Rock. Then head home to enjoy the sunset from your own backyard or meet friends for dinner and drinks at Needle Rock Kitchen & Tap.

And tomorrow? There is an entirely different trail, road, restaurant, or corner of the desert waiting to be explored.

More Than a Place to Live

The Rio Verde Foothills isn't for everyone and that's part of what makes it special.

For those drawn to acreage, privacy, horses, outdoor recreation, mountain views, and a quieter desert setting, the area offers a lifestyle that feels worlds away from the city while keeping North Scottsdale within reach.

Here, home can mean more than the house itself. It's morning trail rides, afternoons along the Verde River, evenings under spectacular desert skies, and having thousands of acres of Arizona landscape waiting just beyond your doorstep.
